Be More Umbrella…

Be more Umbrella?!

‘SOPHIE’ I hear you cry…’WHAT ARE YOU ON ABOUT THIS TIME?!’

Bare with me guys!, have I let you down yet? Strap in and get ready for the next Sophie’s-vague-strange-and-thought-provoking-metaphors, its gonna be bumpy!

So, I, Sophie Rose, Pledge to be more umbrella.

Depression and mental Illness is often depicted as a dark cloud hanging over people. So lets take this image and go all out.

Now I have been surrounded by people suffering in varying degrees and if you know me or have read my other blogs (or are about to ready my other blogs *nudge nudge*) you’ll know that My dad took his life after a battle with depression. I believe the idea of a cloud or rain storm is a pretty good one for depicting mental illness.

Sometimes rain is heavy, and drenches you down to your core and it takes ages to get dry again.

Sometimes rain is scattered here and there, heavy, light and unpredictable.

Sometimes rain is like a fine mist so you can hardly see it but you end up soaking wet before you know it.

I could go on and on with analogies but I’ll let you guys escape with just 3!

Now as an bystander, you cannot control the rain that someone is stood in. The weather is out of your hands. The person in the rain may manage get out of the rain themselves, they may manage to wait the storm out and see it pass. Or they may struggle to not get soaked through.

I put it to you, kind reader, BE MORE UMBRELLA.

Like rain, Umbrellas come in many varieties.

Some are storm proof and withstand it all.

Some get blown inside out at times but with a bit of support can be pulled back in the right way and are as good as new.

Some are huge and fit many, Some are just enough for one.

Some are funky and brighten your day, some may be plain but are always there when you need them.

Some are leaky and have tried to shelter many a storm.

And some are shaped like frogs with eyes on top and have absolutely no reference to what I am saying other than they are awesome.

So what I am saying guys, is that some kind of umbrella is always better than no umbrella.

Be someones umbrella, whether you are strong or struggle at times, whether you need some extra support when it’s particularly stormy or are ready to wait it out for the rainbow…

people will always be thankful for an umbrella.

And you never know when you’ll be stranded in the rain hoping for an umbrella to help you get through the storm.
